Grid or freeform: which defence layout suits your phone

Grid or freeform: which defence layout suits your phone

July 12, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Tower defence games usually split into grid-based layouts and freeform placement, and the difference matters more on a phone than on a big screen. Grid games are precise and easy to tap accurately, which is a real plus when your thumb covers half the board.

Freeform games give you more creative routes but demand steadier fingers. On a small display, dragging a tower one pixel wrong can cost a wave. We tend to bump the zoom up and place carefully rather than fast.

Neither style is better overall. Grid games like Ironvale Siege reward tight optimisation, while freeform titles reward creativity. Pick based on how you like to think, not on which looks flashier in the trailer.

Our advice: try the first few levels of both before committing your evenings. You'll know within twenty minutes which one your brain enjoys more.
